Extra info:
Local community:
The local community relies on trade generated by travellers to Lamu and Mombasa, our excursions to open air markets and craft shops helps to keep the local economy buoyant and securing their way of life and lively hood. All our guides are locally employed not only to give you the best experience and local knowledge but to keep employment within the country of origin.
We are mindful of coastal culture and remind all visitors to never take pictures of the local people or their home without asking their permission and to always dress with decorum.
Our excursions help to support traditional coastal livelihoods we tell our travellers not give money to children on the beach, as this can encourage them to stay away from school.
For every booking made through African Eden a donation goes towards The Born Free Foundations community based project aimed towards solving this ongoing conflict between wild life and residential areas that boarder Kenya’s national parks. If requested we are happy to send you updates informing you of how we have helped to fund a community based project.
African Eden encourages and promote active safari holidays created to inspire and encourage cultural awareness and support the community.
Environment:
All our guides share our goal to limit the damage caused by travellers by increasing their awareness such as not to damage or remove coral, shells, starfish or any other sea – flora or fauna. Removal is illegal, seriously disrupts the eco-system and some marine life is dangerous. The areas outside the parks and reserves are threatened by excessive shell collection. Empty shells provide homes for hermit crabs and some fish. We remind our guests to never dispose of litter on the beach or in the sea. It is illegal and environmentally unfriendly. Marine turtles can confuse clear plastic waste with jelly fish and will die if they eat it. Hand – feeding of fish is discouraged. It disrupts normal feeding patterns. Environmentally friendly activities such as snorkeling and diving are encouraged, under the supervision of our excursion providers, who work closely with us to ensure strict adherence to this code of practice.
African Eden uses Climate Care’s calculator to work out how many tonnes of CO2 our safari activities produce and we pay Climate Care to reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 in another part of the world by investing that money into emission reduction projects. So when a client buys our safari holiday we buy a tonne of carbon from Climate Care’s emission reduction portfolio and in turn a tonne will be reduced through their projects. The money is used to replace fuel-hungry inefficient technologies with low carbon efficient technologies in developing countries. It helps spread the adoption of low carbon technologies (many of which are award-winning) and improves the quality of life for communities and individuals alike.
You will receive a Climate Care certificate showing their emission reduction, as well as reduction tips to help you to continue reducing where possible at home.
