Local community:
Warm and welcoming, Kenya is the place where the phrase ‘Hakuna matata’ (‘no problem’) embodies the national attitude; and a smile is the most valuable currency. The Masai people share this philosophy and are open and welcoming to visitors; However, we believe that giving back by supporting their trade (beads, necklaces, crafts and trademark Masia blankets) is an important part of their livelihood. Therefore our tours include encourage visits to Masai and bomas and markets where you can not only learn their way of life but to also appreciate their skill and craftsmanship by supporting their trade. Their economy is fragile and relies on tourism to thrive.
We pride ourselves on only using local safari guides, of whom demonstrate an encyclopaedic ornithological knowledge (which means they know a lot about thousands of birds species. Kenya has the second highest bird-species count in Africa and the fourth highest in the world!) which they are uniquely keen to share with you.
For every booking made through African Eden a donation goes towards The Born Free Foundations community based project aimed towards solving this ongoing conflict between wild life and residential areas that boarder Kenya’s national parks. If requested we are happy to send you updates informing you of how we have helped to fund a community based project.
African Eden encourages and promote active safari holidays created to inspire and encourage cultural awareness and support the community.
Environment:
African Eden uses Climate Care’s calculator to work out how many tonnes of CO2 our safari activities produce and we pay Climate Care to reduce the equivalent amount of CO2 in another part of the world by investing that money into emission reduction projects. So when a client buys our safari holiday we buy a tonne of carbon from Climate Care’s emission reduction portfolio and in turn a tonne will be reduced through their projects. The money is used to replace fuel-hungry inefficient technologies with low carbon efficient technologies in developing countries. It helps spread the adoption of low carbon technologies (many of which are award-winning) and improves the quality of life for communities and individuals alike.
You will receive a Climate Care certificate showing their emission reduction, as well as reduction tips to help you to continue reducing where possible at home.

Environment:
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and elephant orphange is a small, flexible charity, established in 1977 to honour to memory of a famous Naturalist, David Leslie William Sheldrick. The Trust had successfully saved and hand-reared over 82 infant African Elephant calves, two from the day of birth. Currently, over 40 of the Trust’s hand-reared elephants are fully established and living free amongst their wild peers in Tsavo, some returning with wild born young to show their erstwhile human family.
The Trust has trained a team of competent Elephant Keeper who replace the orphans’ lost elephant family until such time as the transition to the wild herds has been accomplished, something that can take up to l0 years, since elephant calves duplicate their human counterparts in terms of development through age progression. Those that were orphaned too young to recall their elephant family remain dependent longer, but all the Trust’s orphans eventually take their rightful place amongst their wild counterparts, including those orphaned on the day they were born.
The Trust also pioneered the successful hand-rearing and complicated strategy of successful rehabilitation back into established wild rhino communities of orphaned Black Rhino calves. Its expertise has been responsible for saving many orphaned rhino calves on Kenya’s Private Ranches as well as elsewhere in Africa. Its hands-on practical experience and inside knowledge of this species is unmatched. You have the opportunity to adopt an orphan rhino or elephant when you visit the park which goes towards their carer’s, food and upkeep.

The Ol Pejeta Conservancy works to develop the funding necessary to pay for our wildlife conservation work, and to provide financial assistance to projects that assist the people living within our neighbouring communities. By the end of 2007, Ol Pejeta Conservancy had raised and dispersed over US$ 1million in support of its community development programme.
They work with local government and a variety of elected community representatives across the district to identify projects that qualify for assistance from the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. All projects supported are assessed on a case by case basis, and must contain some element of community contribution. They aim to concentrate on the following core areas: health, education, water, roads, provision of agriculture and livestock extension services and the development of community-based conservation tourism ventures.
Based on regular socio-economic surveys, the conservancy aims to provide the support necessary to address real needs and to make a real difference to the lives of the people who live nearby.
